17 Nov – Award-winning director Ang Lee is confident that the Chinese-language cinema will be able to surpass Hollywood in 10 years' time.
According to CRI website, the "Life Of Pi" director, who returned to Taiwan to be the head judge for the upcoming Golden Horse Awards, was asked if the award ceremony is known overseas and if his participation will increase its popularity.
Ang Lee replied, "The Chinese-speaking world is probably four times larger than the English-speaking group. To me, as long as we have influence in the Chinese-speaking world, we will prevail."
He also added, "I think in 10 years' time, our market will be bigger than the Hollywood market, so there is no need to broaden our appeal. Things will come naturally. It will have its ups and downs but if we keep on doing it, eventually it will pay back."
According to Hollywood Reported website, industry analysts predicted that China will become the world's dominant market by 2020 if the current rate of growth is maintained, seeing that it has collected an estimated USD 2.8 billion box office last year, compared to Hollywood's USD 10.8 billion.
The 50th Golden Horse Awards will be held on 23 November in Taipei.
