First 'Iron Man 3' trailer shows potentially the death of Tony Stark

Ladies and gentlemen, the wait is over! The first trailer for the much-anticipated superhero flick of next year, 'Iron Man 3', made its debut on Tuesday (23.10.2012), and it's disturbingly dark. Check out the trailer here:

FIRST LOOK: 'Iron Man 3' trailerThe much-anticipated trailer for 'Iron Man 3' made its debut on Tuesday (23.10.2012), and it shows Tony Stark's dark side.

The two-minute clip is, well, just mind-blowing! The trailer shows Tony Stark's new-but-still-cool-as-hell Extremis suit, the debut of the all-new Iron Patriot suit, Tony and Pepper Potts getting bombed (literally!) at home and of course, a first look at villain extraordinaire, the Mandarin.

Unlike the previous 'Iron Man' movies, it's evident that director Shane Black took a page from Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight' playbook as the latest 'Iron' movie looks way darker than the first two movies combined. In the trailer, we see a very beat-up Tony lying in the snow, arc-reactor flickering and saying: "I have a lot of apologies to make". We also see Tony telling sweetheart Pepper that he "hopes that I can protect the one thing I can't leave without". More disturbingly, the next scene shows Pepper and Tony getting attacked in bed...by Iron Man! Gasp! What is happening here?

But one thing is pretty obvious in this trailer, though: 'Iron Man 3' could mean the death of Tony Stark. As we analysed before, the clip points to Tony ultimately sacrificing himself to protect the people he loves. The lying-in-the-snow-reminiscing-about-stuff scene is one give away, the other being the underwater scene where Iron Man is crushed by his own home. Perhaps the biggest clue lies at the end of the clip: the 'Iron Man 3' ending title card shows Iron Man's reactor flickering, and then slowly goes off. We know; that could mean nothing, but with Marvel, it's the little details that mean the most.

It is very unlikely that they will kill off the most likeable and the most profitable superhero franchise of all time, true, but remember; 'Iron Man 3' kicks off Marvel's Phase 2. And what is Phase 2, you ask? Phase 2 is Marvel's line-up of movies starting from this movie until 'The Avengers 2' in 2015, which also includes the 'Captain America' and 'Thor' sequels. 'The Avengers' director Joss Whedon has revealed that Phase 2 will be very much darker than previous Marvel movies (he plans to take three superheroes to the edge, he said), so we wouldn't be surprised if a main character, if not Tony Stark, dies in 'Iron Man 3'. Pepper Potts, perhaps?

While we can only sit and speculate at this point, Disney has revealed the plot synopsis for the movie along with the trailer:

'Iron Man 3' pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds.

When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him.

'Iron Man 3' stars Robert Downey Jr., Paltrow, Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall and Jon Favreau, and is set for a 25 April 2013 release.

Seriously, we just can't wait!
