8 Sep - AKB48's 27th single "Gingham Check" has done it again for the idol group, taking the top spot of the weekly Oricon singles chart of 10 September with 1.18 million copies sold on its opening week.
According to Tokyo Hive, this is the group's 8th consecutive single to sell more than a million copies since "Sakura no Ki ni Narou" that was released on February 2011, and their 7th single to do so within a week. The group is now also the first female group to have three million-selling singles within two years with this year's "GIVE ME FIVE", "Manatsu no Sounds good!" and "Gingham Check" .
Being the first single released after Maeda Atsuko's graduation, "Gingham Check" marks the first million selling single for new center Oshima Yuko, who has regained the position after two years.
The idol group is very much on their way to create more industry records as they are now tied with famous rock band Mr. Children for the most number of consecutive singles sold over a million, but still away from the record by B'z with 13 consecutive singles.
