[Interview Part 1] Wonder Girls is All About Fun and Communication

Wonder Girls is back with a track you can shake your body to.

The group spent a happy winter with Be My Baby, and this time it will be heating up the summer even hotter with its bouncy second mini album Wonder Party.

The five members of Wonder Girls started off on the interview with enews by agreeing, “It’s easy to go around because it’s the summer and it’s not cold, and we feel great in colorful clothes. We’re having a great time because so many people have welcomed us back.”

Even the face of the rarely-shaken youngest member Sohee seemed to lighten up with a brighter tinge.

Like This, Wonder Girls’ new promotional single, is a hip-hop piece. It’s not like the stereotypical hip-hop that people usually think of, though, but a fun type of hip-hop with a mix of electronic sounds. The members also don baggy t-shirts rather than tight and sexy wear, since they need to go out and par-tay.

“It’s not a style or choreography that is set to be a certain way,” Sohee said. “The song is also in the hip-hop genre. The five members all tried different styles with a freer costume concept. Rather than dance the same dance every performance, we’re also trying to show off new gestures every time.”

The girls have become more outgoing in getting to know their fans.

They’re thinking to shed their top star image and mingle with their fans at eye level. They even put together a flash mob event, which will take place in Yeongdeungpo on June 24, to meet with their fans on a more basic level, in a setting just like the one in the Like This music video.

Yenny said, “The song is all about having fun together. I believe if you’re going to have fun, everyone has to have fun together. We thought we would like to have an event which brings in the public like our music video, and we put together the flash mob because it fit our album’s concept well.”

Wonder Girls bounces around onstage with their leg dance for Like This.

Its performance is definitely different from the other strong and sexy girl group performances out there, so wouldn’t the girls have been hesitant to lift their weight as a senior group among their juniors?

“We loved the choreography when we first saw it,” Yenny disagreed. “It was fun, and it was new. Wonder Girls is always about humor. Tell Me and So Hot all had something funny in it, and [Like This’] leg dance is a continuation of that. I believe it’s a factor that can make everyone enjoy [the song] together. My legs do get numb after dancing continuously, though….”

Yubin added, “We’ve become better at enjoying the show with the audience through our America and Asia tour since our first exclusive concert [in 2009]. We tried to put together a performance for our second exclusive concert Wonder World Tour that doesn’t just have us show what we have to show, but has us bring in the audience and have them join in the fun. I’m sure it’ll be a fun and enjoyable concert.”

Their humor is also part of their efforts to step closer to their fans. They never forget this whenever they’re at a music show, at their concert or at the studio.

Humor and communication is what’s on the road Wonder Girls has walked all this time, and it’s what the girls will continue to aim for in the future.

“We’ve shown how we look polished, but now we want to show our freer selves,” Yenny said. “We aim to make music that relates to a lot of people. We’ll always try something new, but we’ll also always be at the public’s side.”
