Jung Ayul’s Death Raises Concern on Celebrity Suicides Again

Will showbiz again be meeting another suicide phase?

The death of 25-year-old rookie actress Jung Ayul is causing understandable distress in the business.

A rep from Jung Ayul’s agency said on June 14, “Her manager and family found she had hanged herself at her home yesterday, and are now in great shock. She was moved to the hospital but she didn’t make it.”

Jung Ayul appeared as the lead character’s friend in the beginning of KBS2’s TV novel Dear Love.

She planned to launch her career with the role, but she was unable to fulfill her dreams as she took her life so soon after she had taken her first step.

An investigation is still underway on the exact circumstances that caused her death, but according to those close to her, the actress had been suffering from depression.

Producer Son Moon Kwon, who directed the SBS drama New Tales of Gisaeng, was also found dead at his home in January after he had hanged himself.

In his suicide note he had wrote, ‘I fall far behind the things you (scriptwriter Im Sung Han) did for me. I’m sorry to my son. I was always happy during the times I was with you.’ He thus departed at age 41.

Celebrity suicides have been fairly common, with the more recent deaths being those of An Jae Hwan, Choi Jin Sil, Choi Jin Young and Park Yong Ha.

The Werther effect (copycat suicides) has even been pointed out as a social problem, as the number of non-celebrity suicides also soared with the increase of suicides among famous celebrities.

An official that asked to remain anonymous told enews, “The industry is keeping its eyes on whether the nightmare of celebrity suicides, which had been calm for a while, will be starting up again with the death of Jung Ayul. We hope the Werther effect won’t follow.”
