Kiefer Sutherland finds rodeo a relaxing way to spend his downtime.
The Emmy award-winning star has shared his love of rodeo as a former champion. In the past he has won national team roping competitions in Phoenix and Albuquerque. Inspired by the work in films Young Gun and The Cowboy Way, he took time off from making movies in the ‘90s to pursue his other love.
"One of the things I used to do a lot to relax was rodeo,” he said on the Rachel Ray Show.
“I use to do team roping. I rodeoed with the US team champions – and I went to their finals in 1994 and 1996. I did most of my stuff out west. I would run a circuit from middle of Texas from far east [and] I would go all the way to California."
The 24 actor owns a 900-acre ranch in Montana and has travelled on the road for roping contests.
He has shared his talent as a cowboy in the past. The 45-year-old actor opened up about his passion in a 2006 edition of Men’s Vogue magazine.
“What I lacked as a roper and a cowboy I could make up for in horses,” he said. “Roping is one of those sports like polo where you get infinitely better the better your horses are. I had some great horses.”
