Stars gather to bid Cheung Yiu Wing farewell

21 Apr – Stars recently gathered to bid their last farewell to the 'Father of Concerts', Cheung Yiu Wing, who passed away last month.

According to Mingpao, the funeral was held at the Universal Funeral Parlour, attended by not only the existing family members and relatives, but also representatives of the Hong Kong showbiz associations, including the Performing Artistes' Guild and the Performing Industry Association.

Apart from Jacky Cheung, George Lam, Aaron Kwok and others who were the late concert organiser's pallbearers, other stars that came to pay their last respects included Kelly Chen, Andy Hui, Alex Fong, Mark Lui, Joyce Cheng, Patrick Tse, and Deborah Li.

The procession was accompanied by a Scottish bagpipe funeral march, headed towards the Hong Kong Coliseum for a farewell ceremony, the place where Cheung had spent most of his time.

The cremation was held at 3pm at the Diamond Hill Crematorium.

Speaking to the media at the funeral, pallbearer Aaron Kwok who flew back to Hong Kong for the ceremony despite his busy filming schedule in mainland China, said that Cheung Yiu Wing was his benefactor.

"He participated in each and every one of my concerts. He saw my progress on stage and would give me two thumbs up every time I performed the show well," said Aaron.

Aaron also revealed that it was Cheung who helped him become the member of the Jockey Club, saying, "He knew that I wanted to join the club, so he introduced some of his acquaintances to me and enabled me to become a member. He loved horse racing. If there is a show on Wednesday, I know I won't see him there because he will be watching the horse race!"

The singer also expressed his hopes that a statue of the 'Father of Concerts' will be built on the Avenue of Stars so everyone would always remember him.

Cheung Yiu Wing was 83.
