27 Aug – While fans are patiently waiting for local director Ah Niu's second directorial feature "The Golden Couple" to hit cinemas next month, students from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) already had the privilege of watching a 45-minute preview of the movie during a filming workshop with the director at their campus.
It is understandable that there would be hype for Ah Niu's second directorial feature, seeing that his directorial debut "Ice Kacang Puppy Love" managed to achieved remarkable box office results, not to mention that the romance comedy "The Wedding Diary" starring Ah Niu and Elanne Kwong was one of the bigger local box office blockbuster.
"I had spent years planning to shoot "Ice Kacang Puppy Love". It really took me a lot of effort to produce that film. This time, I'm trying to go for a more relaxing type of story for "The Golden Couple". The film is about the relationship between people and money, which I'm sure we can all relate to," said the singer-actor.
When asked whether he would be shooting a sequel for "Ice Kacang Puppy Love", Ah Niu responded, "If you want me to shoot a sequel for my first movie, I don't think I can do it as there's no inspiration for me to continue that story anymore."
The Penang-born filmmaker also revealed that his second movie had cost him and his team millions, as they had to rent a horse race course and sport cars. Further, a 6-second jump scene ended up taking about two hours to film.
"Before I sit in the director's chair, I always thought that being a director is the coolest thing in the world until I personally took up the role. It's hard. I have a bad temper and it's really common for me to scold the crew whenever I'm not satisfied with the filming process."
He added as a tip to the students, "However, sometimes you have to be a little stricter with the cast in order to produce good film."
"The Golden Couple" will be released in cinemas nationwide on 13 September.
