3 Free Things to Do in Klang Valley This Weekend

It’s the end of another week. Time to throw our hands in the air and relax!

Yes, we have chores—from doing the laundry to grocery-shopping—that might conceivably get in the way of our fun. And after doing the groceries, we might even find out that we’ll need to save a little (a lot) just so we can survive till payday. It’s a common scenario for most of us.

Thankfully, there are a lot of places to go to—and things to do—that won’t cost us anything (except, of course, fare and snacks while we’re out). Let’s check out some of the free things we can enjoy doing on our weekends that will still allow us to stay well within our budgets.

Visit Art Galleries in Kuala Lumpur for Free

Get inspired by works of local and foreign artists at art galleries near us. The great thing about most galleries is that there are no entrance fees so we can spend the entire day basking in the presence of fine art without paying for a single penny.

Petronas Gallery

The Petronas Gallery has a collection of art works by Abdullah Ariff and Abdul Latiff Mohdin. We can view the READrawing exhibition at the gallery—from now to June 22, 2014—as it showcases the works of more than 40 Malaysian artists.

Kuala Lumpur City Gallery

Learn more about the hometown we grew up in by visiting the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery. Located in a century-old building, the gallery houses the largest model of Kuala Lumpur alongside the largest Kuala Lumpur Skyline Wood Mural.

National Planetarium

The last time we saw the planetarium may have been as students on a field trip but perhaps it’s time for another visit. Entrance to the planetarium show costs RM 12 for adults without a MyKad and RM 8 for kids 12 years old below but we can visit the planetarium’s gallery for free.

Go Out and Be Active

Weekends are also a time for all those outdoor activities we’ve always wanted to do but never had the gumption, or chance, to try. Parks around the city are perfect destinations for runners, bikers, or those who’ve a yen to enjoy the green spaces in the urban jungle we call KL. Here, too, are a few great spots we can bop over to for our morning exercise routines—and we won’t even have to pay gym fees in the process.

KLCC Park

Gives the Petronas Twin Towers lush, verdant surroundings and has a 1.3 km jogging track coated with a special rubberized material for safety. It also features a man-made lake with a water fountain.

Taman Metropolitan Kepong

This 117-hectare park has a 3.5 km loop for runners and a 5k loop for bikers. RunnersMalaysia.com.my says we just have to bring along 20 cents if we want to use the toilet facilities. The great thing about this park is that we can enjoy the view of the Kepong Metropolitan Lake while we run or bike.

Perdana Botanical Garden

Situated within the Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park, the park is open from Monday to Sunday from 7 am to 8 PM. It has everything most expect from a botanical garden such as a forest tree collection and a fernarium. We can join the free guided walk of the Botanical Garden on Sundays which is scheduled for 8 am to 10 am.

Forest Research Institute of Malaysia

Trail runners can enjoy a 5K or 10K route at the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia. Or a variety of trails at the FRIM, including the 710 m Salleh Nature Trail and the 400 m Razak Walk. The new attraction at the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia’s Mata Ayer Research Station is the Canopy Walkway but this has a RM 5 charge for Malaysian adults.

Staycation Ideas

If going out to galleries and enjoying the greenery at parks around the city don’t sound relaxing though, then perhaps a staycation is the best thing to do on the weekend.

Watch Movies on Cable TV

Who wants to run outside when there’s an Iron Man marathon on cable TV?

Rock Out to Your MP3 Collection

What’s the use of having 10,000 songs on our music libraries if we don’t have the time to enjoy them? We can spend the whole weekend at home playing our entire music collection—from blasting rock to a sweet ballad. And oh, if you have a vinyl player at home which haven

Arts and Craft Time

Let’s go to Youtube and get ideas on what to do with those plastic bottles we’ve accumulated in our homes. Art is often a great way to de-stress, chill, and pass the time away.
