In just a little over a year, the online short film portal Viddsee launched by two former National University of Singapore undergraduates has crossed 5 million unique viewers.

Launch in Feb 2013, the site now has over 10 dedicated channels showcasing the work of film-making talents from Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand.

Just last month, Viddsee signed a partnership with Yahoo to have a branded, dedicated channel within its entertainment portal to showcase the best content.

“I have learnt that a well-told story can resonate very widely and very loudly,” says Singaporean filmmaker Daniel Yam of his breakout short film, "Gift", which was showcased on Yahoo's platform and has since travelled far and wide.

“I did not expect the film to travel so widely on Viddsee, and certainly did not expect viewers from countries like Greece, Romania, Brazil, or Russia,” he adds.

Viddsee’s co-founder Derek Tan, who met fellow film enthusiast and fellow co-founder Ho Jia Jian in an NUS club for film lovers over seven years ago, believes his company is on the right path.

“With the confidence expressed by our users and filmmakers, and as proven by our metrics, we believe that we are on track to demonstrate that Asian short films can reach a global audience,” he said.

Recognizing this potential, Viddsee has launched a new feature, Viddsee BUZZ, (buzz.viddsee.com), which leverages on the nature of the social web to amplify conversations around film content. It brings relevance and context for each film to elicit a wider variety of responses and social sharing across platforms.

“We believe that successful film marketing needs active audience engagement. Viddsee BUZZ’s mix of editorial content and technology triggers the conversations and create engagement opportunities. We envision Viddsee BUZZ as the new communication model for film marketing,” said Viddsee’s community manager Grace Chin.

Since it was first incorporated in January 2013, Viddsee has partnered with Singapore Short Films Awards, DigiCon6 and Filmmakers@DFT to showcase and highlight talents in the region.
