Are Actors Endangering Their Lives for Filming?
Hidden behind the extravagance of every drama is a terrible working environment. With deadly schedules, the staff and actors of dramas are finding themselves in danger.
On May 2, SBS’ One Night of Entertainment revealed the location of where Jang Keun Suk suffered a car accident, while returning from a drama shoot.
After completing a drama shoot in the early hours of April 29, Jang Keun Suk was involved in a car accident near Gyeonggi-do Yeoju, while returning to Seoul. At the location of the accident, there were pieces from the car, scattered around.
The tow truck owner, who took care of Jang Keun Suk’s car, explained, “It was a normal car accident. The driver dozed off and hit the guard rail. They weren’t able to drive the car, so I dropped them off around Seoul.”
The car service center employee also revealed that the car bumper and headlights were broken, but the accident wasn’t as big as the media said it was. Jang Keun Suk, who returned to the drama shoot right after, calmed fans down through SNS.
Jang Keun Suk’ company added, “He fortunately wasn’t injured seriously. After a quick fix, he returned to the drama shoot.” Even so, people are wondering if the streak of bad car accidents for actors will continue from 2011 to this year.
On April 18, there was a huge accident involving a bus full of drama staff and supporting actors, where one person died and around 30 were injured. Again on March 23, Park Ha Sun was involved in a car accident, and on April 26, Park Yoo Chun, currently filming The Rooftop Prince was in one as well.
The main reason why drama actors are especially involved in car accidents is due to the murderous schedules that closely resemble to live broadcasts. One manager explained the drama shoot traveling process, “To get to Busan, it normally takes around six hours, but we went in two or three hours. When we’re busy, to get to Sokcho, which usually takes around three hours, we drove for an hour and half. It would be nice to rest, but the conditions don’t allow us to.”
The bigger problem is that the actors who are injured cannot receive proper treatment before they are needed for filming. If they do, there may be a delay in the broadcast. In April, the victims of car accidents due to scheduling were Heartstrings’s Park Shin Hye, Warrior Baek Dong Soo’s Yoo Seung Ho, and The Princess’ Man’s Hong Soo Hyun.
Especially, Kim Jae Won, who returned to filming without proper treatment, was diagnosed with a neck disk and is receiving treatment now.
Lee Hyun Deok, the director of the Korean Drama Production Company, commented, “Once we went to film overseas, and as we were filming, we realized we had to halt. Due to the lack of rest and the overdrawn filming time, a lot of the staff members ran away. This is a problem that we must all worry about.”
