Mwah! It's National Kissing Day and that can only mean one thing; it's time to set aside your inhibitions, grab the person nearest to you and plant a big fat smacker on their lips.

Or, if you're like most Brits, you'll be content with sending a digital smooch to someone via Facebook, Twitter, email or text message.

Mobile operator Three has done some pretty intense research on the subject of digital courting and the results prove that Brits, despite being thought to be pretty stiff upper-lipped, are happy to dole out the lip service in the digital arena.

65% of those polled admitted to sending virtual kisses every day – EVERY day - and one in five revealed that they were likely to send more than eight kisses per day. And it seems like virtual smooching pays off, as an incredible 20% of Brits admitted that they've ended up snogging in real life after initiating an e-kiss.

Someone hand us a phone, stat!

It seems as if 18 to 24 year olds are the biggest virtual smoochers, with an average of four virtual kisses being sent per day – that's double the national average. Dubbed ‘Generation xxxx’, the kissing fans have also been crowned twice as likely to get a real life smooch following a virtual text than the rest of the UK, with 40% claiming a success rate from amorous sign offs.

No wonder 25% of us sleep with our phones beside us - after all, there's nothing better than some late night lip service!

However, some folks aren't too keen on the new kissing trend and, for many, a virtual MWAH can be more than a little inappropriate. People have been caught out sending virtual kisses to work colleagues, acquaintances and complete stranger - the world's gone kissing crazy!

Etiquette expert William Hanson explained that you should only send a virtual kiss to someone you would kiss in real life:

“Kissing - digital and actual - is rampant nowadays. You should only put a kiss or hug on the end of a text, email or Facebook post if you would actually kiss them in real life. For those you have not met, you work with, or you’re not the best of pals with them, it is advisable to steer clear of the x’s and o’s.”

There's no denying that a kiss, whether it's digital or real, can definitely bring a smile to someone's face. In fact, as Sylvia Chind, Head of Devices at Three said, having a smartphone has allowed us to stay connected with those we care about – and pucker up from miles away with someone we love:

“Having a smartphone means we can be constantly connected to the people we care about through texting, emails and social media. This opens up great possibilities to add emoticons and create digital chemistry that can lead on to much more.”

Who will YOU be smooching for National Kissing Day? Will you be sending your smooch virtually, or will you wait until you can do it for real?
