[Interview] The Wonder Girls’ Favorite Songs From ‘Wonder Party’
Wonder Girls’ second mini album Wonder Party contains the six colorful tracks R.E.A.L, Like This, Hey Boy, Girl Friend, Sorry and The DJ is Mine.
R.E.A.L was written by Yenny, Park Jin Young brought together electronic sounds and hip-hop beats for Like This, Yubin tried her hand at lyricizing in Hey Boy, the R&B piece Girl Friend, also by Yenny, relates to the hearts of women who have been through separation, Sorry is an R&B piece with a memorable hook and The DJ is Mine incorporates dubstep with a shuffle beat.
Out of these six tracks, then, which are the members’ favorites? Lim and Sun chose the promotional single Like This, while the others had their own choices to talk about.
Lim said,“Like This is in a style that I’ve always wanted to try,” while Sun said, “It’s different from the songs we’ve performed before, and every time we dance to it I have fun trying to dance from a different angle. It’s important to think why we’re dancing. I think whenever we dance the leg dance onstage, I start to think with joyful emotions. I’m really, really attached to this song.”
Yubin chose Hey Boy, her debut piece as a lyricist. “I’m attached to Hey Boy, which allowed me to try lyricizing for the first time. I’ve tried writing rap parts, but writing the lyrics for melodies was different. It was hard to write with a definite concept from start to finish, but it was fun.”
“I personally like Girl Friend,” Sohee said. “It’s a new type of ballad that we’ve never sung before. A lot of the girls around me related to the lyrics and kept asking, ‘Is this about me?’ or ‘Did you use my story for the lyrics?’ I especially like it because Yenny unni wrote it so beautifully.”
Yenny said she liked her own piece, R.E.A.L. “I had a hard time writing [R.E.A.L] because it was my first rap-centered piece. I had to stay up whole nights. Later, the song became even better after it met the members’ voices. The vocals each sang out the same part, and you can feel the variety of different voices.”
