Kim Gu-ra steps down due to controversy
17 Apr – It was revealed that South Korean comedian Kim Gu-ra have decided to step down from all of his current broadcast activities due to criticisms on his statements.
As reported on Omonatheydidnt website, the cause of the controversy started when the sharp-tongued comedian made a comparison between a recent incident with the Japanese occupation.
Due to this incident, Kim Gu-ra released an official statement saying he will be retiring from the broadcast industry, effective immediately.
On 16 April, he stated, "If the public can no longer feel enjoyment seeing my face on TV, then I have no right to be a broadcast worker. As such, starting today I have decided to take some time to think and reflect on my actions."
He continued, "As I realised how much my words affected many people, I've always lived with a feeling of responsibility in the corner of my heart. I've always been thankful to those who helped me continue my career despite my many faults. But I once again realise that I cannot wash away all of my mistakes."
Kim ended his statement by apologising to everyone, "To those who've been hurt and angered by my words, not even a lifetime of reflection and apology will be enough. I will spend some time thinking over my actions and looking back on my immaturity."
No statement has been made by the producers of his many shows such as "Immortal Song 2" or "Golden Fishery – Radio Star".
As reported, a group of female workers from a red light district in Korea had been protesting against police crackdowns by renting two busses to take them in front of the human rights office. Hearing the news, Kim Gu-ra compared this with the Japanese occupation, saying, "Prostitutes dividing themselves up into two busses haven't been seen since the Korean Women Labour Brigades."
Historically, the Korean Women Labour Brigades were an organisation formed by the Japanese rulers during the waning days of the Korea occupation and has since become a sensitive issue in the country.
