Penny Tai wins Best Mandarin Female Artiste Award

1 Jul – Fourth time's a charm for Malaysian-born singer-songwriter Penny Tai, who won the Best Mandarin Female Singer award at this year's Golden Melody Awards.

According to Focus Taiwan, the singer-turned-music producer recently walked away with two accolades at the 25th Golden Melody Awards held on 28 June – the Best Mandarin Female Singer award for her album, "Unexpected", as well as Best Producer for her first attempt in producing another singer's album through Koala Liu's "Embrace".

Penny thanked the people responsible for her album, and considered herself one of the lucky ones as she has never received any formal music training before becoming an artiste.

She also expressed her gratitude to her family, fiancé, and fans for their undying support.

The 36-year-old singer even beat three-time winner, Tanya Chua, as well as Hong Kong's Denise Ho and Taiwan's Faith Yang and Jia Jia.

Though this is the first time the singer-songwriter won Best Mandarin Female Singer, she had also won Best Composer back in 2006 for her song "Crazy Love".
