Peter Chan's child smuggling movie inspired by documentary

20 Apr – Hong Kong director Peter Chan recently revealed that he was inspired to direct a film about child smuggling, "Dear Child", after watching a documentary about the topic.

As reported on ECNS, while speaking to the media Peter stated that he once saw a documentary, though did not reveal the title, about parents who were desperate to find their children who were smuggled and sold to other families.

"It's a gloomy topic and quite depressing," said Peter, who also has an eight-year-old daughter with partner, Sandra Ng.

"Sometimes real life can be so dramatic that even the best of scriptwriters would marvel at it."

Meanwhile, the movie scriptwriter, Zhang Jin, who worked with Peter on "American Dreams in China", stated that he went to Shenzhen, the place where the story is set, during his research phase in order to write for the movie.

Peter revealed that he was extremely satisfied with Zhang Jin's work, saying, "Although I am not a mainlander, I believe some emotions are universal. However, I do need experts for the details and I think Zhang Jin has done a good job."

"Dear Child" stars Zhao Wei as a rural woman whose child is kidnapped, while Tong Dawei plays the lawyer who helps her with the search.

The movie is slated for release in October.
