REVIEW: ‘The Avengers’

WIN: Exclusive 'The Avengers' movie merchandise

Director: Joss Whedon

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth

What is it about:
When the villainous Loki (Tom Hiddleston) threatens to destroy the world with his army of ugly aliens, S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has no choice but to call upon his team of “the world’s greatest superheroes” – Iron Man (Downey), Thor (Hemsworth), Captain America (Evans), Black Widow (Johansson), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) – to save the day.

The good:
We were so overwhelmed; we don’t know where to start. We’ll start of by saying that ‘The Avengers’ is a super well-sequenced superhero movie. In between Marvel-ous fight scenes and action sequences (from start to finish, we must add), director Whedon did an excellent job slotting in actual laugh-out-loud moments; thanks to Robert Downey’s wisecracks and clever dialogues. Each character gets their fair share of the screen time – even Agent Hill, played by ‘How I Met Your Mother’s Cobie Smulders – and as unbelievable as it sounds, they managed to squeeze in a little background story for each one of them. But the show belongs to Mark Ruffalo, who won everyone over with his performance as Bruce Banner/the Hulk. Oh, and prepare yourself for some jaw-dropping cool moments too. Thought Tony Stark’s briefcase suit in ‘Iron Man 2’ was awesome? Thought Hawkeye is just a blah character with a bow and an arrow? Trust us; you haven’t seen anything yet.

The bad:
We have to say; the storyline is very, very similar to this 2011 summer blockbuster movie starring a certain Optimus Prime…but who the heck cares, right? This is ‘The Avengers’ we’re talking about. The sheer awesomeness of this movie will make you forget about this, we promise you.

Final words: We dare you not to watch this movie. Go on. In fact, we double dare you not to watch this movie in 3D.
