[Review] ‘I AM’ Teaches the Importance of Effort and Passion
The title I AM seems to speak for itself. This film is a documentary about who the 32 SM Entertainment stars really are. It shows the real story behind trainees who go through years and years of practice for a performance that lasts four minutes onstage. In other words, this 116 minute long video contains the artists’ youth and their growth.
As I AM is a documentary, it doesn’t have a special story to it. It has the 32 stars, such as Kangta, BoA, TVXQ (DBSK), Super Junior, Girls’ Generation (SNSD), f(x) and SHINee, talk about themselves.
Still, it’s not that simple. The film edits together scenes from the stars’ early years and scenes that show them as they are now, showing how much effort they had to put in to reach the spot they’re at.
Fans will find it delightful to see U-Know Yunho, Max Changmin, Minho, Yesung, Eunhyuk, Yuri, Seohyun, Kyuhyun and more as children in elementary school and middle school. Yuri was a girl with good rhythm, Seohyun was a girl who could sing and Taemin was a boy who could dance like no other; these talented soon-to-be-stars are most of what entertains in the film.
It’s fun to watch this rare footage from the past, but it’s also touching to listen to the concerns stars have never been able to open up about before.
Super Junior’s Ryeowook said he couldn’t cry after Super Junior’s debut when everyone else did.
“Everyone had gone through a long training period. I was the only one that made it to his debut in just two months, so I thought I had no right to cry. I wasn’t able to cry in front of everyone, so I cried in the back where no one else could see,” he said.
TVXQ, which had to go through a change in member composition from a five-member-band to a two-member-band, talked calmly about what it had to go through at the time.
U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin said about their first performance as a duo in August 2010 at the SMTown Live 10-World Tour, “Before the performance, we were afraid on whether everyone would have waited for us. It didn’t feel like a comeback; it was a hope hanging by a thread, a hope that the two of us could do it.”
SHINee’s Jonghyun, who’s always powerful onstage, shed tears while talking about his family right after his debut performance.
F(x)’s Sulli said after seeing a video of herself crying during a dance practice session, “I cried everyday with the thought that I was being a burden to the other members.”
Many trainees have had their faces covered with mosaics in many of the videos. It means that not all trainees get to where the SM stars are now.
Some gave up, while some went on to become celebrities. Luck is, of course, important in showbiz, but skill is needed to support it. I AM proves this is true with its own brand of intensity.
I AM isn’t just a film for fans who like stars in SM. The film teaches its audience the importance of effort for every youth dreaming of living a passionate life.
The best part is when all the stars come together to put on a splendid performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Anyone who’s interested in seeing K-Pop explode in the middle of New York will enjoy this film. I AM will premiere on June 21, and is for all audiences.
