Wong Kar Wai wanted Tony Leung to win Best Actor

16 Apr – "The Grandmaster" director, Wong Kar Wai is happy to win Best Director at the 33rd Hong Kong Film Awards, but was disappointed that his actor and constant collaborator, Tony Leung Chiu Wai lost yet another Best Actor accolade.

As reported on Mingpao, while speaking to the media at "The Grandmaster" celebratory party at Carina Lau's restaurant, Wong, who was named Best Director again after his last victory through "Chungking Express" in 1994, stated, "This time around, a lot of people came to support us. Thus, I am happy that a lot of our cast and crew are awarded."

In regards to Tony Leung's loss to Nick Cheung, Wong, who admitted that he did hope for the actor to win, said, "I am a little disappointed that he didn't win. But perhaps the judges did not want Tony to be so proud and hope that he will continue to perform."

He added, "Tony doesn't need an award to prove himself. He can do whatever he wants to do."

Meanwhile, when asked about the Best Actor loss, Tony replied, "When "The Grandmaster" won [Best Film], I am already a part of its win."
