Yuvan Shankar Raja converts to Islam

13 Feb – Award-winning film composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, who is also the son of well-known film composer Ilaiyaraaja, confirmed that he has converted to Islam.

According to India Today, there have been rumours about the 34-year-old composter-songwriter's decision to embrace Islam circling the grapevine for quite some time, but they remained rumours until recently. Yuvan was said to be marrying a Muslim woman, forcing him to clarify the rumours in Twitter.

"I'm not married for the third time. The news is false, and yes, I follow Islam and I'm proud of it," he said.

"My family supports my decision and there is no misunderstanding between me and my dad," he added.

Initially, Ilaiyaraaja was shocked and opposed to the decision, but eventually he came to terms with it.

A source close to Yuvan said that the composer's decision to embrace Islam was due to his need for solace and inner peace following a series of unfortunate events. The composer has been through two marriages, one in 2005 and another in 2011, but both ended in divorces. In 2012, Yuvan's mother passed away, and a few months ago, his father suffered a heart attack.

To date, Yuvan has composed music for 100 films, his 100th film being the Tamil film "Biriyani".
